So I've begun singing and playing guitar, and I never used to basically because my mom would always say, "My girls were never graced with my singing voice". She was joking, but it really kept me away from singing. My mother has a beautiful voice, and she is kind of a music snob (although she doesn't know good music when she hears it). what I mean by snob is whenever she hears an off key note she turns up her nose and comments about it.
I remember having a solo in the Christmas program at school in elementary school because my music teacher chose me for it. People complimented me, but I don't think I ever got a compliment from my mom. So I just stopped singing. Now that I have my guitar and I am singing, I have been keeping it to myself, until just recently. I sang first in front of Joe, and i was so nervous, and my voice was all shaky, but he still told me I was awesome. So then I was singing in front of my other friends with no problem.
Today I sang in front of my mom. I wasn't looking for a "oh my gosh Megan, you have a beautiful voice" but I was hoping for some sign that she liked it. I'm sitting on the couch singing, letting my guard down for her, and she pulls out her book. When I leave the room, she immediately turns on the television like she was waiting for me to finish so she could watch tv.
Thanks mom.
I'm sorry.
ReplyDeleteBut she doesn't mean everything though.
What really matters is that you're not afraid to sing for God, and that the one guy for you likes it. (:
Thanks Hannah :D
ReplyDeleteYeah don't let it get you down, some parents just have trouble understanding the impact of what they're doing/saying. And at this point you shouldn't really care that much whether you're a bit off key anyway. No one will be Bocelli the first time they try seriously singing, it takes years and years of practice just like any instrument.
ReplyDeleteSome internet community I'm a part of has a great thread on singing tips
